The building sector is the only sector that has missed climate targets in 2020, and the responsible ministries have to improve. It’s about a lot of money.
The federal government has decided on a billion dollar program for more climate protection in the building sector. There are additional funds of 5.7 billion euros for the energetic building renovation, as the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting.
Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) spoke of unprecedented record sums and money well spent for climate protection and jobs.
The background to the program is that the building sector was the only area that failed to meet its climate protection targets last year. Therefore, according to the Climate Protection Act, the responsible ministries have to make improvements – the Ministry of Economics and the Ministry of the Interior. An emergency program presented in July provided for additional funds of 5.8 billion euros. However, from the point of view of an expert council for climate issues set up by the federal government, the program was not sufficient to achieve climate targets in the building sector. That is why it has now been improved.
