Corona tests: Germans will soon have to pay for rapid tests themselves

The free corona tests for everyone will soon be history in Germany. In a few weeks, there will be a new regulation on the assumption of costs – with only a few exceptions.

Corona rapid tests usually have to be paid for by yourself from October 11th. Generally they remain free for people who cannot be vaccinated, including children under 12 years of age. This is stipulated in a new ordinance of the Federal Ministry of Health, which implements a corresponding federal-state resolution. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the Prime Ministers had agreed that the offer for free “citizen tests” for everyone, financed by the federal government since the beginning of March, should end. Since free vaccinations are now possible for everyone, taxpayers no longer have to pay the test costs on a permanent basis.

The ordinance announced in the Federal Gazette also lays down some transitional rules. Children aged 12 to 17 and pregnant women can take at least one free test per week until December 31st. The reason is that a general vaccination recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) has only recently been available – so there should be longer time for a vaccination.

Corona rapid tests for children remain free

According to the regulation, children who have not yet reached the age of 12 or who only turned 12 in the last three months before the test can generally continue to be tested free of charge. It remains free, among other things, for people who need a test to end a quarantine due to a corona infection.

In order to get free quick tests from October 11th, you have to present an official ID with a photo to the test center. Extra evidence such as a medical certificate is required if you cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons – according to the ministry, a diagnosis does not have to be given. The maternity card can therefore be used to prove pregnancy.
