“For peace, freedom and prosperity” numerous people are again taking to the streets in many cities in the new federal states. For them, that means lifting the sanctions against Russia.
In numerous East German cities, thousands of people protested again on Monday evening against high energy prices and the policies of the federal government. As police spokesman said on Monday evening, around 6,000 demonstrators came together in more than 12 cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In Schwerin alone there were 1600 participants. In addition, there were several hundred people in Wismar, Parchim, Ludwigslust, Güstrow, Neubrandenburg, Neustrelitz and Waren an der Müritz, among others.
Thousands of people took to the streets again in Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. After a month-long break, the extremist and Islamophobic Pegida movement met again for the first time for the “Great Dresden Evening Walk”. Several hundred Pegida supporters gathered on Dresden’s Neumarkt near the Frauenkirche, with almost equal numbers of mostly young people protesting.
According to the police, around 1,100 people in Magdeburg followed a call from the AfD. In the center of Leipzig there were clashes during the Monday protest between participants and counter-demonstrators, as a police spokesman said. The elevator, whose number of participants was said to be in the “very low four-digit range”, was blocked by several hundred participants out of the counter-protest. In Plauen, however, everything went quietly, said a spokesman for the Zwickau police department.
