The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently examining an application from vaccine manufacturers Pfizer and Biontech for a third dose of vaccine against the coronavirus. The authority announced on Thursday in Amsterdam.
This so-called booster to protect against corona infection could be injected into fully vaccinated people from the age of 16 and at the earliest six months after the second vaccination dose. After evaluating the data submitted by the manufacturer, the EMA intends to make a decision on the application at the beginning of October.
Various countries are already offering the third dose of vaccine, but initially only for patients with a particularly weakened immune system.
According to the EMA, manufacturers have not yet submitted an application for approval of vaccines for children under the age of eleven. However, the agency expects Pfizer to submit the first data for review in early October. The company Moderna wants to present this in November. So far, the vaccines from both manufacturers are the only ones approved for adolescents aged twelve and over.
