Relations between France and the US are strained due to the submarine dispute. France’s Foreign Minister Le Drian now wants the USA to take concrete steps.
After the fierce submarine dispute, France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian calls on the United States to take concrete action.
At a meeting with his US colleague Antony Blinken, he also noted that an end to the crisis between the two countries would take time, according to a statement. Le Drian saw the phone call between the two presidents on Wednesday as the first step towards reconciliation.
Last week, without consulting its allies, the US launched a security pact with Australia and Great Britain in the Indo-Pacific, thus triggering a deep diplomatic crisis with France. The pact shattered a multi-billion dollar submarine deal between Australia and France, which led to angry reactions in Paris. Le Drian had complained about the procedure in unusually sharp words. France’s ambassadors to the United States and Australia have been called back for consultations.
A top-level phone call followed on Wednesday. US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed to meet in person in October. The French ambassador, who has been brought back, will also go back to Washington.
