Angela Merkel visits the bird park – and produces great photos

The office of Chancellor comes with it: There are dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands of photos of Angela Merkel that will be remembered. Shortly before the end of her term of office, she added a whole series of other curious and colorful photos to her personal souvenir album in a bird park in her constituency.

Shortly before the federal election in 2021, Angela Merkel visited the Marlow Bird Park for an election date. The Chancellor got to feel first hand what the idyllic bird zoo in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has to offer: budgies, cockatiels, zebra finches and parrots – all of these animals fluttered around Angela Merkel during her visit and even ate out of her hand.

Angela Merkel in the Marlow Bird Park: Parakeets and parrots land on the Chancellor

Lured by a paper cup full of lori nectar made from dried pollen, fructose, grain and water, the birds willingly settled on the Chancellor and let themselves be hand-fed. One of the Australian Loris even landed in her hair. Perhaps there would even have been spectacular pictures with a European eagle owl – but the Chancellor shrank from that. She didn’t want to hold the approximately 60 centimeter tall owl after all and acted modestly: “No, no. I did well with the parakeets.”

By the way, there was a little accident during her visit to her traditional constituency: One of the birds was apparently too pleased with the delicious nectar – but pinched it and caught the Chancellor.
