A former companion of Sebastian Kurz accused the ex-chancellor of being the mastermind behind a system of bribery and abuse of office. It’s about fictitious opinion polls and false testimonies. While Kurz faces ten years in prison, trust in the established parties in Austria is eroding.
Sebastian Kurz likes to talk about his glory days. When he associated with world leaders like Trump, Xi and Angela Merkel as a halfway equal statesman. The former star of the Conservatives goes into raptures when it comes to Austria’s deceased national saint Niki Lauda, who is said to have encouraged him to run for the office of Federal Chancellor over a soft-boiled egg and chive bread in Vienna’s Café Imperial. “Our talks were always about risk. Which risks should you take and which not,” recalls Kurz. He was impressed early on by how Lauda knew how to deal with disasters.
