In Poland, several cities and regions had declared themselves to be «LGBT ideology-free» zones. Now the regional parliament of the Swietokryskie Voivodeship has canceled the declaration after pressure from the EU.
A region in the south of Poland has overturned a resolution against non-heterosexual people (LGBT) following pressure from the EU.
The regional parliament of the Swietokryskie Voivodeship voted on Wednesday to delete a declaration adopted in 2019 on “Resistance to LGBT ideology”.
Almost a hundred cities and regions in Poland have declared themselves “LGBT ideology-free” zones. Most of them are in the strongly Catholic east and south of the country.
The EU Commission has therefore suspended negotiations on regional funding with five Polish regions. “The EU Commission has emphasized that it violates Article 2 of the European Treaties if areas, workplaces or services are defined as LGBT-free,” said the head of the regional administration of Swietokryskie, Andrzej Betkowski. A few days ago the Krakow region reacted to pressure from the EU and revoked its status as an “LGBT ideology-free” zone.
The EU Commission received the move positively. “We see a movement in the right direction and expect other regions to go the same way,” said Commission spokesman Christian Wiegand of the PAP news agency. The situation will continue to be closely monitored.
