Global warming is the greatest health risk of our time – that’s what doctor and bestselling author Eckart von Hirschhausen says in the podcast “important today”. “We don’t have to save the climate, we have to save ourselves”, said Hirschhausen before the global climate strike this Friday. The human brain is the most heat-sensitive part of the body. “Long before we tip over and have heat stroke, we have lost productivity. And not only that: we are also demonstrably becoming more aggressive, we make more mistakes and there are more suicides.”
We are asking the wrong question
A majority is not clear that the prosperity in Germany is massively endangered by the climate crisis. “We always talk about: ‘What does climate protection cost us?'”Hirschhausen is annoyed. “We finally have to talk about: ‘What does it cost us not to do anything?'” Economic growth alone is not the only thing worth striving for. “We should first secure the living conditions, and then we can talk about what makes human life more beautiful.”

Get out of the coal
As the most important measure for the new federal government, Eckart von Hirschhausen cites a rapid phase-out of coal energy. “Every day we keep burning coal is a crime: against the atmosphere, against the people who breathe the shit – because there is a lot of dirt in the air – and against the earth”says Hirschhausen. “The current government has done a lot to block the energy transition. That is fatal.”
