STORY: Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday avoided admitting defeat in his first public statement, which lasted only about two minutes, since Sunday’s election. However, the right-wing populist assured that he wanted to abide by the constitution and thanked his voters. After the president’s brief speech, the head of cabinet announced that the handover of government affairs to the victor, Lula da Silva, would be initiated. Bolsonaro narrowly defeated Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential election. So far, however, he has remained silent, fueling speculation that he might not accept the result. And in some parts of the country there had been protests by Bolsonaro supporters.
