After winning the 2020 presidential election, the Democratic Party faces a dark awakening this November. Citizens will re-elect the entire House of Representatives with a total of 435 MPs and a third of the seats in the Senate at the Midterms next Tuesday. Currently, President Joe Biden’s party has a razor-thin majority in both houses of Congress. They hold 222 of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. The Republicans only need five victories in previously Democratic districts to cause a so-called flip of the congressional chamber. Reason enough to take a closer look at five interesting duels.
Midterms: Republicans are the clear favorites
The Republicans are the clear favorites in both the Senate race and the House of Representatives race. The statistics portal FiveThirtyEight predicts a victory in the House of Representatives with a probability of 85 percent. On the one hand, this is due to the currently extremely pessimistic mood in the country and, on the other hand, to the classic processes in the American electoral system. The largest nationwide election after the presidential election is usually seen as a reckoning with the current administration in Washington. It is therefore not surprising that the opposition in particular can regularly celebrate successes in the midterms.
This was also the case four years ago, when the Democrats were able to take over the House of Representatives from Trump’s Republicans. Four years earlier, in 2014, the Republican Party won both chambers of Congress, blocking pretty much every decision made by former President Barack Obama.
Its Democratic Party is hoping this year to use the highly controversial Supreme Court decision to uphold the right to abortion contained in the Roe v. Wade was anchored in tilting, being able to avert defeat. Abortion is considered one of the most important issues in this year’s elections. The extent to which women’s rights could be further restricted also depends on the races in Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, Texas and California.
