Accidental death of a cyclist: Last generation does not tolerate criticism (opinion)

After the accidental death of a cyclist, the climate activists of the last generation complain that a “media system” is inciting hatred against them. The group is correct on one small point. Above all, she shows that she doesn’t take criticism.

The activist group Last Generation has slammed the media and announced more protests after the death of a cyclist who was hit by a cement mixer, whose rescue may have been hampered by climate lockdowns. “We didn’t expect that an entire media system would turn against us,” said the group in a statement quoted by “Spiegel”.

In the statement, the group complains about a “wave of allegations, untruths and hate speech” against itself and accuses the “media landscape” of “fictionally exaggerating the circumstances of the cyclist’s accident in Berlin in this form and thus democratic protest in a crisis situation delegitimized”.

Amazing Last Generation Suit

It’s an astounding statement from a group otherwise keen to take advantage of the media now being criticized. Because with the adhesive campaigns – be it on the street, be it in museums – the last generation feeds the media in a targeted and conscious way. Without the media, nobody but a few motorists and museum visitors would know about the actions of the last generation.

Personally, I think the group’s goals are right and important, but the actions are borderline to idiotic. Media attention is part of the group’s calculations. But when there is criticism, the “rush” of a “media system” is immediately complained about. The choice of words is astounding: “media system” is more likely to come from the spectrum ranging from lateral thinkers to right-wing extremists. Yes, the “Bild” has been railing against the adhesive campaigns for weeks and is now writing about “climate criminals”. Overall, critical comments are likely to have increased. But that a “media system” would have turned against the last generation is now far exaggerated. Anyone who does such actions and only expects applause is at least naïve.

Other people are to blame for the accident

Hopefully those who are stuck have considered before taking action that the consequences can be more far-reaching than someone being late for work. The public cannot judge whether an earlier arrival of the fire brigade would have actually saved the woman’s life. The main blame for this ultimately fatal traffic accident lies with those involved in the accident. This is actually something that was neglected in the coverage of the accident. The cyclist did not run over the last generation, but the person at the wheel of a concrete mixer. Experts and courts have to clarify who exactly is to blame.

Regarding the accident, the statement by the activist group says: “So that we don’t misunderstand each other: the fact that the cyclist had an accident on the road is terrible. We are dismayed and in mourning”. However, it is “time to draw a line,” adds the group, Last Generation, with a view to reporting on them.

Adults take criticism

Guys, someone died. It’s not about you and your egos right now. Adults have self-reflection and the ability to take criticism. In both cases, the last generation definitely still has room for improvement.
