At least 23 people have been killed in fighting in Somalia, according to the military. As Hassan Jami’i, lieutenant in the Somali armed forces, confirmed to the German Press Agency, heavily armed fighters from the Al-Shabaab terrorist militia attacked a military base in the early hours of the morning.
“Six of our soldiers were killed,” Jami’i said. In addition, 17 al-Shabaab fighters were killed in the fighting in the central Somali province of Mudug, north of the capital Mogadishu. The attack was immediately preceded by a serious suicide attack.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack and said it had killed 37 soldiers. The statement also said the group had taken possession of nine military vehicles. The information could not initially be verified independently.
The government in Mogadishu has been conducting a military offensive against Al-Shabaab for several months. The Islamist terrorists control large parts of the central Somalia region and the south of the country. However, with the support of armed clans and civilians, the Somali military has recently been able to gain large amounts of territory against Al-Shabaab.
