Nuclear power: Leak in cooling system of French nuclear plant discovered

A radioactive leak has been detected at the nuclear power plant in Civaux, which is currently shut down. It says there is no risk to the environment or public health.

A leak was discovered in a reactor at the Civaux nuclear power plant in France. In the nuclear power plant in the west of the country, a leak was found in the primary circuit of the cooling system, the operator group EDF announced. No radioactivity was measured outside the facilities. Nobody was injured or contaminated.

According to this information, the leak was discovered last week by experts as part of an investigation that takes place every ten years. The cooling system was tested without fuel elements. Water vapor escaped. The nuclear power plant is currently off the grid. The deputy head of the Institute for Radio Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), Karine Herviou, assured the France Info channel: “There is absolutely no risk to the environment or public health.” The leak appeared on some kind of seal. The problem is relatively easy to fix in a few days.

According to EDF, it is still unclear how the incident will affect the further operation of the power plant. The plant, which was taken offline for the controls, is actually supposed to be started up again on January 8th. Almost half of the 56 French nuclear reactors are currently off the grid for maintenance or repairs.
