It’s the night before America’s fateful election. US President Joe Biden is standing in a gym at Bowie State University, a good 30 minutes’ drive from the White House. The basketball hoops have been pulled under the hall ceiling, the brass band heats up the hundreds of spectators from the stands, the cheerleaders are dancing. “Our democracy is in danger,” the Democrat calls to his supporters in the gym – and to the Americans who watch his speech on TV.

Almost an eight-hour drive west, former Republican President Donald Trump made a remarkable announcement in the state of Ohio at almost the same time.

Joe Biden speaks of “turning point”

Bowie, Maryland. When Joe Biden stepped up to the lectern at 7:26 p.m. local time, the crowd jumped. Here in the gym, they still believe in him. He takes off his jacket and rolls up his sleeves. His message: Look, I’ll fight to the end: “Today we are at a turning point, one of those moments that happen every three or four generations. We know that our democracy is in danger and we know that this is the moment is to defend them, to preserve them, to protect them, to choose them,” the US President says. A performance without a blunder, even single disruptors in the hall don’t faze him. The Secret Service takes care of them.

For Biden, it is the endgame in the poisoned campaign for the congressional elections. The democratic president has now ruled for two years with a wafer-thin majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Today (Tuesday) both chambers will be re-elected. Republicans have fielded many candidates loyal to Trump, including conspiracy ideologues. If they actually win, they will make life in Congress hell for Biden.

One of the most emotional topics: abortion. While many Republicans want to ban them entirely in the US, Democrats want women to make decisions about their own bodies. Both parties are also irreconcilable on sensitive issues such as gun control, taxes, fighting inflation and health insurance.

Donald Trump makes announcement

The Republican party is primarily controlled by a man who is not currently standing for election: Ex-President Donald Trump. He is always and everywhere present.

Donald Trump has hinted that he could announce a new candidacy for US President next week. During a campaign appearance in the state of Ohio, Trump announced a “big announcement” on November 15 the night before the congressional elections. He justified the week-long waiting period by saying: “We don’t want anything to distract from the importance of tomorrow.”

It has long been speculated that Trump could announce his own candidacy in the 2024 presidential election after the success of well-disposed candidates.

Trump chose his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida as the location for the prospective event on November 15. During the appearance on Monday, he again repeated his false claim that current President Joe Biden only won the election against him in November 2020 through fraud.
