From April to September, around 50 attacks on refugee accommodation were registered nationwide – significantly more than in the period of the previous two years. The left calls for a “social outcry”.
Attacks on refugee accommodation in Germany have increased significantly in recent months. In the second and third quarters of this year, 46 such attacks were registered nationwide – far more than in the corresponding period of the two previous years.
This emerges from the response of the federal government to a parliamentary question from the left, which is available to the German Press Agency (dpa). The “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” reported about it first.
According to this, from April to June there were 33 politically motivated crimes “in which the accommodation itself was the scene of the crime or a direct target”. According to preliminary statistics from the investigative authorities, there were at least 13 such cases between July and September. According to the left-wing faction, the federal government gave a total of 36 attacks for the second and third quarters of 2021 and 39 for the corresponding period of 2020.
In view of the increasing numbers, the left-wing faction’s refugee policy spokeswoman, Clara Bünger, called for a “social outcry”. All democratic forces must clearly oppose right-wing and racist violence.
In the past year, a total of 70 attacks on asylum accommodation were registered. This number is likely to be exceeded by the end of the year, since there were already further cases at the beginning of the fourth quarter: A refugee accommodation near Wismar burned down in October. A few days later, an arson attack was carried out on a former hotel in Bautzen, which was also intended for refugees. So far, however, the extent of the attacks is not comparable to the peak of the refugee crisis. In 2015, there were more than 1,000 attacks on refugee accommodation across Germany.
