Higher birth rates and increased immigration: More than 800,000 children started school in 2022/2023. There haven’t been that many in 17 years.
The number of school starters this year has risen to its highest level in 17 years. According to the Federal Statistical Office, citing preliminary results, 810,700 children started school in 2022/2023, 5.2 percent more than in the previous year.
The strong increase can be attributed to demographic developments such as higher birth rates and increased immigration. Most recently, more children were enrolled in school in the 2005/2006 school year.
At the end of 2021 there were around 2.9 percent more children of the age of 5 to 6 years relevant for starting school than in the previous year. Among them were 8.1 percent more foreign children and 2.1 percent more children with German citizenship. The Federal Office explained that the proportion of Ukrainian students cannot be quantified.
With 93.6 percent, the majority of the children started their school career according to the statistics at a primary school. 3.2 percent were enrolled in special schools, 2.4 percent in integrated comprehensive schools and 0.9 percent in free Waldorf schools.
