The polling stations have been open since 8 a.m. because Germany is electing a new parliament. But the federal elections are not going smoothly everywhere. Annalena Baerbock, Armin Laschet and Olaf Scholz have already cast their votes as the top executives of their respective parties – of course during a photo session. After 16 years Merkel will probably move into the Federal Chancellery again – at least if the polls before the election were not completely wrong.
First interim results from various federal states sometimes point to a slightly higher turnout in the federal election than four years ago. Numbers on nationwide voter turnout were not yet available by early afternoon. In several large cities and countries, however, the turnout until late morning or noon was higher than in the federal election four years ago, whereby the increase in postal votes also played a role.
