Federal election 2021: This is how young people voted

According to previous projections, it is clear: SPD and Union are head to head. According to surveys, young people think very differently.

It remains exciting. According to current projections, the SPD will be the strongest force in the next Bundestag, closely followed by the Union. If it were up to the young voters, however, things would look very different, as the results of the polls by the election research institute “Infratest Dimap”, which the “Tagesschau” published online, show (As of 9:14 p.m.).

Most first-time voters are liberal

Perhaps the biggest surprise first: According to the polls, it is not the Greens who do the best among first-time voters – it is the FDP. 23 percent are said to have voted for the Liberals. The Greens follow directly with 22 percent. In third place came the SPD with 15 percent, the Union with ten percent no longer made it onto the podium.

This distribution of votes apparently also made the FDP member of the Bundestag Konstantin Kuhle proud:

If you extend the age horizon to include young voters between 18 and 24 years of age, the Greens and FDP are on par with 22 percent each. Both parties have one thing in common: Compared to the 2017 federal election, they have apparently increased in popularity among young people. The Greens and FDP were able to gain nine and ten points respectively in this age group. The biggest loser among the young electorate is the Union: Compared to the last election, it has lost 14 percentage points of approval among 18 to 24-year-olds.

Union is losing ground in every age group

As expected, a contrasting – and clearer – picture emerges among older voters. 39 percent of the over-70s voted for the Union parties, 34 percent for the SPD. The other parties are far behind: Here, the FDP is only eight percent enough for third place.

The SPD can look forward to the largest increase in this age group, which was able to make up nine percentage points among this electorate compared to the 2017 federal election. By the way: only the Union and the Left have lost popularity in every age group. The Greens, on the other hand, have been able to convince more Germans of all ages.
