Federal election 2021: Hans-Georg Maaßen missed entry into the Bundestag

He officially missed his goal: the former head of the protection of the constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen, is not moving into the new Bundestag. He landed in second place in his constituency in Thuringia.

CDU Politician Hans-Georg Maassen missed entering parliament in the federal election in 2021. In the Thuringian constituency 196 (Suhl / Schmalkalden-Meiningen / Hildburghausen / Sonneberg) the former President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution only reached 22.3 percent of the votes cast. This emerges from the result for the constituency published by the regional returning officer in Thuringia.

Hans-Georg Maaßen missed entry into the Bundestag

The region in the south of the Free State will be the SPD candidate and former biathlon Olympic champion in the coming legislative period Frank Ullrich represented in the Bundestag. He can 33.6 percent of voices to unite. On the runner-up Maaßen follows the AfD candidate Jürgen Treutler with 21.2 percent.

Maassen has come under massive criticism not only from political opponents, but also from his own party. The 58-year-old had repeatedly made headlines with slogans and positions close to the AfD and positioned himself far to the right politically. He also showed a proximity to conspiracy narratives. In order to prevent Maassen’s entry into the Bundestag, the Greens, among others, also called for the SPD candidate to be elected. Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet had avoided in the entire election campaign to distance himself from the controversial ex-constitution protection chief and member of the “Union of Values”. Maassen spoke of a “serious defeat” on Sunday evening.

The SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach, however, was pleased with the result. “There’ll be a lot to celebrate today,” he tweeted. The defeat of Maassen is one of them. “We have not forgotten the horror of National Socialism and are fighting all new beginnings.”
