After arriving in Bali for the G20 summit, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was taken to a hospital, Indonesian authorities said. The reason is “health problems”. But his ministry promptly denied it.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was hospitalized with health problems after arriving in Bali for the G20 summit. The news agency reported on Monday, citing Indonesian authorities.
Three Indonesian government and medical officials told the Associated Press that the Russian diplomat was being treated on the resort island. Two of the people testified that Lavrov was being treated for a heart condition.
Officials told AP he was taken to Sanglah Hospital in the provincial capital Denpasar. The hospital has not yet commented on this.
Russia denies and speaks of “peak of counterfeiting”
However, the Russian Foreign Ministry immediately denied the report. “This is of course the peak of the forgery,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, according to the news agency. “We are here with Sergei Viktorovich in Indonesia reading the ticker and can’t believe our eyes,” Zakharova said in Nusa Dua on the island of Bali on Monday.
Zakharova released a video of Lavrov, President Vladimir Putin’s foreign minister since 2004, sitting outside on a terrace, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, reading documents.
Asked about the report, Lavrov said Western journalists had erroneously written for a decade that Putin was ill. “It’s a kind of game that’s not new in politics,” Lavrov said, according to Reuters. “Western journalists have to be more honest – they have to write the truth.” I Wayan Koster, the governor of Bali, said Lavrov was in good health and had been hospitalized for a health check.
“He was in good health and after the examination he left immediately,” the governor said.
Lavrov is the highest-ranking Russian official attending the G-20 summit that begins Tuesday.
