Flowers for the soldiers on site and champagne in Kyiv – the whole of Ukraine celebrates the liberation of Cherson. President Volodymyr Zelenskyj declared on Friday evening that the city once again belongs to “our people”. Russia had previously announced the complete withdrawal of its troops from the capital of the region of the same name in southern Ukraine. This ended almost nine months of Russian occupation.
“We see happy, smiling faces,” reports Andriy Scholob, commander of a paramedic unit about 50 kilometers from Cherson. “We get flowers, embroidered cloths that we put on our vehicles,” he told the AFP news agency on the phone. “We see children running towards us to greet us.” Scholob admits that there are certainly people in the southern region of Ukraine who regret the Russian withdrawal. Luckily he hasn’t met any of them yet, says the trained orthopedist from Lviv.
President Zelenskyj travels to liberated Cherson
Only a few days after the Russians withdrew, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to the city. Zelenskyi told journalists on Monday that he wanted to express his personal support to the people of Kherson with his presence. “So that they feel that we’re not just talking about it, not just making promises, but actually returning, hoisting our flag.” The 44-year-old emphasized that he also wanted to feel the emotions and energy of his compatriots himself. “That’s also very motivating.”
