China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping has called on US President Joe Biden to expand cooperation. “The successes of China and the United States are opportunities, not challenges for each other,” Xi Jinping said at their meeting on the Indonesian island of Bali on Monday, according to Chinese sources. “The world is big enough for our two countries to develop and prosper together.”
The interaction between the US and China should be characterized by dialogue, mutually beneficial cooperation, rather than confrontation and a zero-sum game, Xi Jinping said. China is not trying to change the existing international order. Both sides should work together to put the relationship on the right track – “without losing direction or speed, and certainly without clashing”.
Neither should try to change or undermine the other’s system. Both countries have different development paths, which is why there are also differences, but these should not become an obstacle, said Xi Jinping according to this information.
China is actually one of Russia’s allies. Relations with the United States had recently been tense because of Chinese military maneuvers in the South China Sea off the coast of Taiwan.
China and the US must work more closely together on climate issues
In Bali, however, it looks like the two great powers are getting closer again. At least the aborted climate talks between the US and China may have started moving again. According to the White House, Biden underlined that both countries must work together on major world issues such as climate change, economic stability, debt relief, health and food security.
Both presidents have instructed their senior officials to “deepen constructive efforts on these and other issues,” it said. The hoped-for resumption of the climate dialogue, which China broke off in August due to tensions with the United States over Taiwan, was not announced.
However, the US climate commissioner John Kerry and the top Chinese climate negotiator Xie Zhenhua met again at the COP27 world climate conference in Egypt and exchanged ideas.
