Former TV news anchor and ardent Trump supporter Kari Lake has lost the Arizona gubernatorial election. Like her mentor, she is now fueling doubts about the legitimate election results.
According to media reports, candidate Kari Lake, supported by ex-US President Donald Trump, lost the gubernatorial election in the state of Arizona to Democrat Katie Hobbs. Hobbs prevailed after a tight race against her Republican rival, as reported by US broadcasters CNN and NBC on Monday (local time).
“Democracy is worth the wait,” Hobbs wrote on Twitter, referring to the day-long vote count after last Tuesday’s election. “Thank you, Arizona. I am so honored and proud to be your next governor.”
Former Republican governor Doug Ducey was unable to run due to a term limit. Arizona is considered a contested state in the USA, which has changed more and more from a once republican stronghold in favor of the Democrats. In the election on Tuesday last week, governors were voted on in 36 states. It is the most important office in a federal state, comparable to a prime minister of a federal state in Germany.
Kari Lake belongs to the squad of election deniers
Lake is a die-hard Trump supporter. Like her mentor, the former TV news anchor regularly expresses doubts about the legality of the 2020 presidential election. Lake also cast doubt on the TV stations’ projections for the gubernatorial election in Arizona. The people of the state were not fooled, she wrote on Twitter. Trump raised allegations of fraud on his online platform Truth Social. “You just took the election away from Kari Lake. It’s really bad out there,” he wrote.
Midterm elections in the US
From the youngest congressman to the first woman governor, these candidates are making history at the Midterms
Several Trump-backed candidates suffered defeats in last Tuesday’s congressional and gubernatorial elections, weakening the 76-year-old’s position within his party ahead of the expected announcement of his re-election as president.
Trump promised a “very big announcement” on Tuesday evening (9 p.m. local time; Wednesday 3 a.m. CET) at his private estate Mar-a-Lago in the state of Florida. The right-wing populist is then expected to announce that he wants to run in the 2024 presidential election.
