The CDU member of the Bundestag Philipp Amthor lost the direct mandate in his constituency in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Sunday. The 28-year-old only came third with the first votes in constituency 16.
The CDU member of the Bundestag Philipp Amthor has lost the direct mandate in his constituency in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the SPD politician Erik von Malottki. 20.7 percent of the voters gave Amthor in constituency 16 their first vote, as announced on the homepage of the regional return officer on Monday morning. Amthor ended up only in third place, behind von Malottki (24.8 percent) and the AfD politician Enrico Komning (24.3 percent).
Philipp Amthor is probably moving to the Bundestag anyway
In 2017, the then 24-year-old Amthor won the direct mandate with 31.2 percent. That year he was the top candidate of the CDU in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the federal election. Thus, Amthor will most likely still move into the Bundestag.
“That was an absolute election thriller,” said von Malottki of the German press agency. The SPD won this constituency for the first time. “I am incredibly proud,” added the Social Democrat.
