Corona pandemic: No more isolation requirements in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg

In the two southern federal states, people infected with corona no longer have to stay at home from today. Reactions to the measure have been mixed.

Corona infected people in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg no longer have to go into isolation from today. “Instead of the obligation to isolate, there are mandatory protective measures for those who have tested positive,” said Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU). From now on, a mask requirement as well as entry and activity bans, for example in medical and nursing facilities, will apply to them.

In neighboring Baden-Württemberg, infected people will also be required to wear masks for five days outside their own homes, as the Ministry of Health in Stuttgart announced on Tuesday. “Basically, anyone who is ill and has symptoms should stay at home as before and take sick leave,” said Baden-Württemberg’s Health Minister Manne Lucha (Greens).

Balance between protection and personal responsibility

Holetschek said that the decision to lift the obligation to isolate and the new protective measures was taken in consultation with experts. “One thing is clear: we will not let the pandemic run free.” The new regulations are a balance between personal responsibility and the protection of vulnerable groups of people.

The German Foundation for Patient Protection criticized the regulations as “contradictory” and “chaotic”. There can be no talk of infection protection for vulnerable groups. Representatives of the Bavarian teachers’ associations called for clear and implementable rules and a clear definition of what “sick” or “contagious” means. The health and culture ministries in Munich had previously announced the principle: “Anyone who is ill does not go to school.”

The Bavarian Economic Advisory Council, on the other hand, called the end of the obligation to isolate a “right step at the right time”.

The two states, as well as Hesse and Schleswig-Holstein, announced new regulations “promptly” last week. Hesse left the exact time for this step open. In Schleswig-Holstein, the obligation to isolate will probably no longer apply tomorrow.
