Annalena Baerbock and Peter Altmaier: Political celebrities miss direct mandates

Two federal ministers competing against each other. A city in which the AfD – again – does not go down well at all. And a four-fold premiere in Baden-Württemberg. Here you can find constituency knowledge about the federal election.

There were also surprises, premieres and prominent names away from the big Berlin political stage on Sunday. A look at some particular constituencies.

Federal Minister against Federal Minister

Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) won the duel against Federal Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) for the direct mandate in the Saarlouis constituency. Maas came to 36.7 percent of the vote according to the preliminary result, Altmaier to 28.0, as the state election officer announced on Sunday evening. It was the only nationwide duel between two federal ministers for a direct mandate for the Bundestag. In the 2017 federal election it was the other way around: At that time, Altmaier left the field as the winner. Maas (55) had moved into the Bundestag via the SPD state list. Both Maas and Altmaier are native to the district.

Potsdam duel of the candidates for chancellor

SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz has won the constituency of Potsdam as a direct candidate with a clear lead. Scholz came to 34.0 percent in the Bundestag election on Sunday, as announced by the Brandenburg State Returning Officer. In second place in the celebrity constituency was Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock with 18.8 percent. The result in constituency 61 (Potsdam – Potsdam-Mittelmark II – Teltow-Fläming II) was followed with tension nationwide, as two candidates for chancellor were fighting for a mandate.

Not a good patch for the AfD

Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia is still not a good place for the AfD. According to the preliminary final result, the party will get 2.9 percent of the second vote in the federal election. This is 2.1 percentage points below the result of 2017. Nationwide, the alternative for Germany in the student and bishop’s city already received the fewest second votes in the 2017 federal election with 4.9 percent. Right-wing populists were not weaker in any other constituency in the election four years ago.

SPD strongest force - "Many want the next Chancellor to be Olaf Scholz"

Olympic champion wins against Maassen

Ex-Federal Constitutional Protection President Hans-Georg Maaßen (CDU) clearly failed with his candidacy for a direct mandate in the Bundestag. The controversial CDU politician got 22.3 percent of the first votes after counting all votes in the southern Thuringian constituency in 196. His SPD opponent, the Olympic champion and ex-biathlon national coach, Frank Ullrich, won the direct mandate with 33.6 percent of the first votes.

Greens celebrate premieres in the southwest

For the first time, the Greens won direct seats in a federal election in the southwest. Green top candidate Franziska Brantner (42) won the first direct mandate for her party in Baden-Württemberg on Sunday evening in Heidelberg. In the constituency of Stuttgart I, ex-Greens boss Cem Özdemir (55) prevailed. And in Freiburg and Karlsruhe, the young candidates Chantal Kopf (26) and Zoe Mayer (26) won.

Defeat for Kretschmann’s son

Johannes Kretschmann, the son of the Green Prime Minister, has clearly lost in the fight for the direct mandate in the Zollernalb-Sigmaringen constituency. The 43-year-old Green politician landed clearly behind the CDU candidate Thomas Bareiß, as the Sigmaringen district office announced on Sunday evening.

Well-known CDU names lose their direct mandates

With Chancellor Helge Braun, Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner and Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, three other CDU political celebrities missed direct mandates. According to the regional returning officer, Klöckner only achieved 29.1 percent in the Kreuznach constituency in Rhineland-Palatinate – and thus lost to competitors from the SPD. This is what happened to Braun, who received 29.6 percent of the first votes in his constituency in Hesse, Giessen. In the Saarbrücken constituency, Kramp-Karrenbauer lost 25.1 percent of the vote. Kramp-Karrenbauer wanted to recapture the direct mandate in the Saarbrücken constituency for the CDU after it went to the SPD in 2017.

And: The CDU member of the Bundestag Philip Amthor also lost in his constituency in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania against the SPD politician Erik von Malottki. Amthor ended up only in third place – still behind the AfD politician Enrico Komning (24.3 percent).

Direct mandate in Merkel’s previous constituency goes to the SPD

After more than 30 years, the CDU has not won the direct mandate in Angela Merkel’s previous constituency in a federal election. For constituency 15, the 27-year-old Anna Kassautzki of the SPD is now moving into the Bundestag with 24.3 percent of the first votes, as published on the home page of the state returning officer. In second place in the constituency of Vorpommern-Rügen – Vorpommern-Greifswald I, Merkel’s successor as a CDU direct candidate, 33-year-old Georg Günther. 20.4 percent of the electorate voted for him. He was just ahead of Leif-Erik Holm from the AfD (19.9 percent). The outgoing Chancellor has won the Bundestag directorship in Western Pomerania eight times in a row since 1990. This year she did not run for election.
