Coalition discussion: Lindner: FDP wants to conduct preliminary investigations with the Greens

When it comes to the question of who will lead the next federal government, it depends above all on the smaller partners in a coalition: the Greens and the FDP. The Liberals therefore want preliminary talks.

After the federal election, the FDP wants to hold talks with the Greens about a possible coalition with the Union or the SPD. The party leadership had decided to take up “preliminary soundings” with the Greens, said chairman Christian Lindner after deliberations between the federal executive board and the presidium.

“Between the Greens and the FDP there are the greatest differences in content in the parties of the democratic center that could now talk to each other about forming a government,” he explained. “That is why it makes sense, in view of this polarization that sometimes exists, to look for the common ground.”

The FDP and the Greens are also the parties that have opposed the status quo of the grand coalition the most, said Lindner. “And that’s why it makes sense that these two first seek a conversation with each other to see whether, despite all the differences, it could become a progressive center of a new coalition.” Lindner emphasized: “Neither the Union nor the SPD stand for departure. Both parties rule for a long time. “

After these talks with the Greens, the FDP was open to “accept invitations from the CDU / CSU or SPD, if they come, about further discussions,” said Lindner. When asked about the polarization he mentioned between the FDP and the Greens, he pointed out the different approaches to climate protection. The FDP is following “more of a technologically driven model”, the Greens sometimes turn it into a “lifestyle question”.
