The Greens won 16 direct mandates in the federal elections – 15 more than in 2017. In addition to Robert Habeck and Cem Özdemir, Omid Nouripour was able to win. His constituency in Frankfurt had previously gone to the conservative Erika Steinbach.
The Greens directly won 16 constituencies across Germany – four years ago it was only one. In addition to three direct mandates in Berlin and two in Hamburg, this year there was also an electoral district for Robert Habeck in Flensburg-Schleswig, as well as one for ex-party leader Cem Özdemir in Stuttgart. In Frankfurt am Main, Omid Nouripour is especially happy.
Not only because he is the first Greens from Hessen to win a direct mandate. Even his predecessor, ex-Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, hadn’t managed to do that here. But Erika Steinbach – the ex-president of the Federation of Expellees, who is now close to the AfD. “She won the constituency for years. That shows how much this city has changed,” said foreign and defense politician Nouripour.
The first green was Christian Ströbele
Nouripour has been a member of the Bundestag for the Greens since 2006, and he was also number two on his party’s state list. As the first Green politician nationwide, Christian Ströbele won a direct mandate in the federal election in Berlin in 2002, and he then repeated this success three times. After his retirement from federal politics, his successor Canan Bayram succeeded in doing so in 2017. There were other green direct mandates in Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Aachen, Münster, Bonn and in the metropolises of Cologne and Munich.
