With the worst union election result of all time, Armin Laschet is one of the clear losers in this federal election – in contrast to the SPD. Nevertheless, Laschet has so far avoided congratulating Olaf Scholz.
CDU Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet is one of the biggest losers in this federal election. With 24.1 percentage points, the Union was able to convince almost nine percent fewer voters compared to 2017. It is the worst result since the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949.
In complete contrast, Olaf Scholz can feel like a big winner: With 25.7 percentage points – a more than five percent increase compared to the last federal election – the SPD is the strongest force again for the first time in 16 years.
Armin Laschet: Don’t say “defeat”
At this point it is actually proper for the losers to congratulate the election winner – especially among the “people’s parties” SPD and Union it should be. But so far Armin Laschet has apparently made no move to follow the etiquette. According to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”, he only congratulated all “competing parties that have grown”. In other words, congratulations to the SPD, among others, but not directly to the closest competitor, Olaf Scholz.
On the contrary: He put the current finance minister himself on a par with himself in seemingly obvious words: “Olaf Scholz and I are called to be equally humble.” The CDU candidate for chancellor, who does not want to use the word “defeat”, is now under increasing pressure even in his own ranks after the disastrous results. Whether he can move into the Chancellery ultimately depends on the Greens and the FDP, who have already announced preliminary talks – and are considered “Chancellor makers”.
