Joe Biden again? Who could be running for the presidency among the Democrats

Joe Biden again? Who could be running for the presidency among the Democrats

It is quite possible that in two years’ time the US presidential election will be a duel between two really very old white men. Joe Biden, in 2024 an impressive 82 years old, against challenger and predecessor Donald Trump, at the age of 78 not exactly a young warrior.

The midterms are only a few days old when the parties in the USA are already turning their attention to the race for the presidency in 2024. As is well known, ex-President Donald Trump has pushed ahead among the Republicans and threw his hat in the ring. In addition, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida who was re-elected by a large margin, is a fresh potential challenger. And Trump’s former deputy Mike Pence is also said to have ambitions.

The Democrats, on the other hand, have a problem of their own. It reads, “What’s Joe doing?” Incumbent Joe Biden naturally has the first right of access when it comes to the Democratic nomination for president. After the unexpectedly good performance in the midterms, Biden sees his ambitions for a second term confirmed. “My intention is to compete again,” he said recently. Over Christmas he wants to discuss with his family whether he wants to go back into a stressful and certainly dirty election campaign when he is well over 80.

Biden’s democratic party comrades, on the other hand, are concerned about his possible renewed candidacy. On the one hand, there is the multitude of legendary dropouts, which indicate that Biden must pay tribute to his age and the pressures of the office. The polls are also rather ambiguous, with around 60 percent of Democrats opposed to Biden running again. The left-wing activist group RootsAction has already started an online petition entitled “Don’t run, Joe” to dissuade Biden from running again.

But if not Joe, then who? Among the Democrats, too, the midterms have strengthened a few key potential Biden competitors, notably California and Illinois governors Gavin Newsom and JB Pritzker, who are said to have ambitions for the candidacy. Newsom, in particular, had recently staged himself to attract the public by publicly attacking his fellow Republican governor Ron DeSantis.

In the end, Newsom vs. DeSantis may end up being a duel between two young, white men. Or a surprise candidate is emerging from the Democrats. There is definitely a choice, as our photo gallery shows.
