The largest German foreign mission is nearing its end. The German soldiers are said to have left Mali by May 2024. Other nations are also withdrawing. This will have dramatic consequences – which will ultimately hit Europe again.
It was just a few dry sentences from the Minister of Defense – but they will have serious consequences: “This mission will be over in May 2024,” said Christine Lambrecht last night. The withdrawal from Mali should be “coordinated, with a very clear plan”. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who would have liked to extend the mission, had to back down in the power gamble against Defense Minister Lambrecht in Berlin. The real losers, however, are others – the people of West Africa.
