Bundestag election: Söder: Scholz had the best chance at the Chancellery

CDU leader Armin Laschet has not yet given up his claim to lead the next federal government. In contrast, the sister party CSU cannot see any government mandate for the Union in the election results.

CSU boss Markus Söder sees the mandate to hold talks about a new federal government initially with the SPD, the Greens and the FDP. It was the SPD’s turn, said Söder on Tuesday after the first meeting of the CSU regional group in Berlin.

If that doesn’t work, the Union is ready for any talks. “Olaf Scholz currently has the best chances of becoming chancellor,” said Söder, referring to the SPD candidate for chancellor.

It is important to respect the election result, said the CSU boss. For the Union it was “a heavy defeat”, it suffered a break-in on a broad front. Therefore, he also wanted to congratulate Scholz on the fact that the SPD received the most votes.

For the Union, no government mandate can be derived from the election result, but it remains a responsibility. One is therefore ready for talks about a possible Jamaica coalition with the FDP and the Greens. “But we will not curry favor.” Söder made it clear that after the election defeat, the Union now had to bring “stability and order” into its process structures in order to be ready to talk at all.

Even Brandenburg’s CDU leader Michael Stübgen does not see the Christian Democrats as having a chance to form a government after the fall in the federal election. «We didn’t win the election and got the worst result in our history. We have to acknowledge that, as much as it hurts, ”said Stübgen of the German press agency. “The voters have strengthened three parties and now expect them to deliver first,” said Stübgen, referring to the SPD, Greens and FDP. The Union had slipped nationwide to 24.1 percent.

The chairman of the CDU regional association in Braunschweig, Frank Oesterhelweg, suggested that the CDU chairman Armin Laschet resign. “With the current personnel table, it doesn’t go any further. With Armin Laschet as party leader, the reorganization of the Union cannot be achieved in the long term, ”Oesterhelweg told the political journal“ Rundblick ”in Hanover. «We suffered a crushing defeat and made drastic mistakes. «In addition, there have been« a little bit of slip by the party chairman ».
