After three years of forced residence in China, two young Americans were allowed to return to their homeland. The government may have set the two as pledge for top manager Meng Wanzhou imprisoned in Canada.
The siblings Victor and Cynthia Liu, both US citizens, were allowed to fly back to the US from Shanghai last Saturday. Their departure date after their three-year forced residency in China suggests they were part of a deal that allowed Meng Wanzhou – daughter of the founder of Chinese tech group Huawei – to return to China.
The top manager was arrested in Canada in December 2018 at the request of the US authorities. The US government accused her, among other things, of bank fraud. Meng Wanzhou was allowed to leave Canada on Saturday. Victor and Cynthia Liu had previously been banned from leaving the country in June 2018, together with their mother Sandra Han. According to media reports, the three were able to move freely in China, but were not allowed to return to their homeland.
Prisoner Exchange with Canada
The Hong Kong newspaper “South China Morning Post” reported, citing the siblings’ lawyer, that the two siblings were detained because the Chinese authorities are looking for their father in connection with a fraud case. However, according to their own statements, neither of them had had any contact with him for a long time.
Together with the Liu siblings, two Canadians who had also been detained in China since 2018 were allowed to leave on Saturday, just hours after the release of Chief Financial Officer Meng, according to Hong Kong and US media reports. Like the Chinese government, the US government denies an exchange of prisoners. The cases were accidentally raised during a telephone conversation between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping. The safe arrival of 22 year old Victor and his 30 year old sister Cynthia Liu in the USA was made. Her mother remains in China, however, and is still not allowed to leave the country.
