Ilya Ponomarev, 47, is a former Russian Duma deputy from Novosibirsk. In March 2014 he was the only parliamentarian to vote against the annexation of Crimea. He was first stripped of his immunity in 2015 and his mandate in 2016 with questionable allegations. He fled to Ukraine, where he still lives today and organizes resistance against the Putin regime.
What will it take to topple Vladimir Putin’s regime in Russia?
First, we need a military victory for Ukraine, which means the recapture of all Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia. Only then will the political system in Russia crack and part of the elite will refuse to obey the dictator. Second, we must create an alternative center of power that can also be recognized internationally as the legitimate representative of the Russian people. This opposition body can then negotiate with the people in Putin’s circle of power and give them security guarantees if they switch sides. We are currently working intensively on setting up this body.
