Parties: Will Wagenknecht set up his own party?

The controversial left-wing politician Wagenknecht apparently has ambitions to found a new party. She sees a “political gap in the party system that urgently needs to be filled,” according to sources close to her.

The left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht apparently continues to play with the idea of founding her own party. After warnings from her comrade Gregor Gysi about a split in the left, it was said from Wagenknecht’s environment that the politician was of course speaking to party colleagues and also to Gysi.

“But these talks don’t change the fact that Ms. Wagenknecht sees a political gap in the party system that urgently needs to be filled and that the left is currently not filling.”

Gysi had recently made several appeals to Wagenknecht, who is at odds with the left leadership and has been considering a new party for some time. Gysi told the “Rheinische Post” and the Bonn “General-Anzeiger”: “It is a very unfortunate time for a debate in the left about founding a new party.” He is trying to work against a split and has therefore already had a meeting with Wagenknecht.

In the MDR, Gysi spoke of a “historical responsibility” at Wagenknecht and said: “Now I want to help once again as effectively as possible to lead out of this existential crisis.” Wagenknecht remains important for the party. “Anyone who thinks they would do particularly well without them is deluding themselves.”
