Vladimir Putin laughs at Olaf Scholz’s fake speech

Videos with forged statements by politicians have often caused confusion. Now Vladimir Putin had such a deepfake shown to him – with Olaf Scholz as the speaker. The Russian President apparently liked what he saw.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had the possibilities of artificial intelligence demonstrated using a fake speech by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The state news agency Ria published a short video of the Kremlin boss watching the alleged appearance of the SPD politician in Moscow.

Scholz says the right thing, thinks Putin

In this so-called deepfake, the Russian programmers first put words critical of America from the popular Russian action film “Bruder 2” into Scholz’s mouth. Then they have him say: “We wanted to give up Russian gas. But to put it in the words of a Russian classic: We wanted the best, but it turned out as always.” This dictum comes from Viktor Chernomyrdin, who was Prime Minister of Russia in the 1990s and is known for numerous bon mots.

Even if that’s not real, Scholz says the right things, Putin commented on the fake video. The speech was rich in content and profound. In the past, European politicians have repeatedly fallen for deepfake videos. For example, when callers posed as Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko or as Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD). Behind it was a Russian comedy duo.

Since Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine nine months ago, Germany has been trying to free itself from its dependence on Russian natural gas.
