Protests in China: “They are not yet a threat to Xi Jinping”

In China, more and more people are taking to the streets against President Xi Jinping’s corona policy. Genia Kostka, Professor of Chinese Politics at Freie Universität Berlin, explains why the time has only come three years later – and what the World Cup has to do with it.

In Germany, some citizens protested and rebelled against the corona measures in the first year of the pandemic. This is only happening in China now – after three years. Why were the citizens so obedient for so long, Ms. Kostka?

The Chinese population was used to drastic health measures even before the pandemic, so the corona measures were not entirely new. For three years, it was also trusted that the Chinese course of “Zero Covid” was the smartest in the world. The propaganda also contributed to this.

And what has changed that the citizens are now protesting?
