China: Police controls prevent further protests

Watch the video: protests are abating – everyday life in China is continuing with the pandemic.

STORY: The protests in China against President Xi Jinping’s corona policy have apparently subsided. In the capital Beijing, the situation was rather calm on Tuesday. Mass tests against the corona virus continued here as well as in the financial metropolis of Shanghai. At the weekend there were clashes between demonstrators and police officers in several cities during protests against the strict corona restrictions. The police then tightened their controls and security measures. The US government expressed support for the protests on Monday. However, the White House has been reluctant to criticize Beijing. “We continue to fight for the right to peaceful protest and I think we will monitor this closely and see how it goes.” The protests are the largest demonstrations of civil disobedience in China in decades. However, the Chinese artist and dissident Ai Wei Wei does not believe that they can shake the apparatus of power. “I don’t see any decisive organization or leadership in this type of protest. There is no clear political agenda, so it’s very easy to arrest them and move on,” the artist, now based in Portugal, told Reuters on Monday. Chinese authorities reported a slight decrease in new corona infections on Tuesday. On Monday, the National Health Commission had recorded a record increase for the fifth consecutive day, with more than 40,000 new infections.
