Military: Lambrecht: Bundeswehr will be able to defend

It is nothing new that the Bundeswehr has been neglected and cut back for many years, said Defense Minister Lambrecht. But she is full of confidence for the future.

Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht has assured allies and partners that Germany is using the 100 billion euros in special debt to build up defensible armed forces.

At the Berlin Security Conference, the SPD politician said it was nothing new that the Bundeswehr had been neglected and cut back for many years “and we are in a very, very difficult situation.” With the “turning point” after the Russian attack in Ukraine, however, a correction has been initiated.

The neglect must end. “We can’t go on like this. That’s why it’s important that there was a very clear announcement,” said Lambrecht. “We will ensure that the Bundeswehr is able to ensure national and alliance defense in the future and can also be equipped accordingly with a special fund, a special fund in the order of 100 billion euros.”

She reiterated continued support for Ukraine and NATO allies on the eastern flank. Lambrecht: “For us Germans it is important that our allies know that they can rely on us. We are loyal partners and, above all, very committed partners.”

Numerous high-ranking representatives from politics and the armed forces of allied and friendly states will speak at the conference until Thursday. The organizers describe the meeting as the first major conference of this kind since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began in February.
