The criticism of the organization of the elections in Berlin has grown louder. State Returning Officer Petra Michaelis draws the conclusions. She asks the Senate to recall her.
Berlin’s regional returning officer Petra Michaelis resigned her position three days after numerous mishaps during the elections in Berlin.
“As part of my role as regional returning officer, I will take responsibility for the circumstances surrounding the election on September 26, 2021,” she said on Wednesday. “I ask the Senate of Berlin to recall me immediately after the meetings of the state electoral committee on October 11 and 14, 2021 and to appoint a successor.”
The criticism of the state election control had recently become much louder. The pressure on Michaelis, who had apologized for the election breakdowns for the first time on Tuesday evening, had grown. In Berlin there were not only long queues in front of polling stations on Sunday. In some cases, voters had to wait well after 6 p.m. to cast their votes. By then, the polling stations should already be closed. In some districts there were also no ballots. Critics spoke of election chaos in Berlin.
In addition to the general election, the House of Representatives and the district representatives were re-elected in Berlin on Sunday. In addition, the Berliners voted on a referendum.
The state election control had stated that, according to initial assessments, there were probably difficulties in around 100 of the 2,257 Berlin polling stations. But enough ballot papers have been prepared, around 110 to 120 percent of the need. A full clarification of the problems will take until next week. The election can only be contested after the official final result has been determined on
October 14th possible.
