Government: Trump also triggers outrage in the ranks of the Republicans

Ex-President Donald Trump does not just leave it at his allegations of alleged election fraud. Now he is also questioning the US Constitution. That’s going too far even for Republicans.

Critics of former ex-US President Donald Trump have reacted with outrage to his recent call for the constitution to be overturned over alleged electoral fraud.

Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social, which he founded, over the weekend: “A massive fraud of this type and scope allows the repeal of all rules, regulations and articles, including those in the constitution.” Trump suggested he should be declared the rightful winner of the 2020 presidential election – or the election would have to be repeated. Democrats and individual Trump critics in the Republican Party rated Trump’s fantasies of breaking the US Constitution as unacceptable.

Trump “enemy of the Constitution”

Republican Liz Cheney wrote on Twitter: “No honest person can deny that Trump is an enemy of the Constitution.” Her party colleague Adam Kinzinger criticized in a tweet: “This is insane.” When the ex-president calls for the constitution to be thrown overboard, “not a single conservative can legitimately support him, and not a single supporter can be called conservative”.

Cheney and Kinzinger are among Trump’s harshest internal party critics and have thus been given more of an outsider role. Both are still members of the House of Representatives, but will be leaving the Chamber of Congress at the turn of the year. The Republican leadership in Congress, on the other hand, initially did not comment on Trump’s statement – and has silently overlooked many of Trump’s provocations in the past.

Trump was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, but to this day refuses to admit defeat. Trump has never substantiated his claims that he was deprived of a victory through massive fraud. He and his team were also defeated in several lawsuits with their allegations.
