When it comes to CO2 emissions, India is – still – one of the “big guys”. But during the visit of the German Federal Foreign Minister to New Delhi, a lot is about climate protection.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock wants to work with India to advance the fight against the climate crisis. No army can protect against the greatest threat to all people in this century, “we can only fight it together,” said the Green politician on Tuesday at a forum in the capital New Delhi on Germany’s priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.
She is pleased that India has put climate protection at the top of the agenda for its G20 presidency.
India took over the presidency of the G20 group of leading industrialized and emerging countries on December 1st. The motto of the Indians for their presidency is: “One Earth, One Family, One Future”. Baerbock said it reflects “that we can only face this future together if we stand united as a family” – even if we don’t always agree.
India is at the forefront when it comes to CO2 emissions
India ranks fourth in greenhouse gas emissions – after the US, China and the European Union. Calculated per capita, however, a person in India uses much less energy than a person from Germany. But the country needs a lot more energy because millions of people still do not have access to electricity.
When it comes to growth, India is increasingly relying on renewable energy in the electricity mix and is building large solar parks, among other things – but the country is also relying on more coal, on which it is currently mainly dependent. India aims to become carbon neutral by 2070.
In the afternoon (local time), the minister wanted to visit the village of Khori in the state of Haryana, about a two-and-a-half hour drive outside of New Delhi. There, a meeting was planned with the head of a non-governmental organization that deals with the topics of microfinance, sustainable energy, reforestation and the empowerment of women in society. Baerbock also wanted to visit a farm irrigated with solar-powered pumps.
