Extremism: Alleged “Reich citizens” wanted to overthrow the state

They believe in the “deep state” and are planning a coup. Several thousand police officers have moved out against a suspected terrorist group. What the investigators report can inspire fear.

A terrorist group is said to have formed in the Reich citizen scene, which is said to have prepared the overthrow of the political system in Germany. On Wednesday, the federal prosecutor’s office had 25 people arrested in several federal states as well as in Italy and Austria, including a former AfD member of the Bundestag and an incumbent judge. The entrepreneur Heinrich XIII is considered a ringleader. Prince Reuss of Hesse.

“The investigations allow us to look into the abyss of a terrorist threat from the Reich citizen milieu,” said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD). Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann described the nationwide raid as an “anti-terrorist operation”.

“Reich citizens” are people who do not recognize the Federal Republic and its democratic structures. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution ascribes around 21,000 followers to the scene.

Dead people were also accepted for the overthrow

According to the investigation, the suspects founded the association by the end of November 2021 at the latest. They wanted to replace the state order in Germany with their own, as the federal prosecutor in Karlsruhe announced. They have already worked out the basics of these structures – including a kind of minister around a head of state. They would have accepted the dead for the overthrow and specifically recruited soldiers and police officers. The group is driven by conspiracy ideologies.

Around 3,000 police officers were deployed in eleven federal states, including an exceptionally high number of special forces. Federal prosecutors accuse 22 of those arrested of being members of a terrorist organization, two of them as ringleaders. Three others are considered supporters. With the exception of one Russian, all have German citizenship.

A focus with eight arrests was in Baden-Württemberg. “We don’t have a name for this association yet,” said the agency’s spokeswoman. In addition, there are 27 other suspects. More than 130 objects were searched.

The members are firmly convinced that Germany is currently being governed by members of a so-called deep state, according to a statement by the federal prosecutor. They expected an “alliance” to set them free. This is a technically superior secret society of governments, military and intelligence services from various countries, including the Russian Federation and the United States of America. The association firmly assumes that their attack is imminent.

Desired takeover of power in Germany

The terms “deep state” or “deep state” are used in conspiracy myths. This is based on the idea that secret powers are pulling the strings in the background of political decisions.

The central body of the group is a “council”. Similar to the cabinet of a regular government, this has departments such as justice, foreign affairs and health. “The members of the “council” have met regularly in secret since November 2021 to plan the intended takeover of power in Germany and the establishment of their own state structures,” said the federal prosecutor. An interim government should have negotiated the new state order in Germany with the Allied victorious powers of the Second World War. “From the point of view of the association, the main contact for these negotiations is currently the Russian Federation.”

A “military arm” should also “eliminate” the democratic constitutional state at community, district and municipal level, it said. The association is aware that there will be deaths. “However, it at least accepts this scenario as a necessary intermediate step to achieve the “system change at all levels” it is aiming for.” Some suspected members of the military arm would have done active service in the Bundeswehr.

Also suspected KSK soldier

Above all, they would have wanted to recruit members of the Bundeswehr and police for the planned overthrow of the state. At at least four meetings in Baden-Württemberg in the summer, suspected members promoted the terrorist organization and its goals. Members of the “military arm” scouted out Bundeswehr barracks in Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria “to inspect their suitability for housing their own troops after the overthrow.”

The investigations of the federal prosecutor’s office are also aimed at a soldier from the Bundeswehr’s Special Forces Command (KSK) and several Bundeswehr reservists. The active soldier was on the staff of the KSK, said a spokesman for the military counter-intelligence service.

The fact that the former AfD member of the Bundestag Birgit Malsack-Winkemann is among the suspects is very worrying, said SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich (SPD).

Malsack-Winkemann sat for the AfD in the Bundestag from 2017 to 2021, in March 2022 she returned to the judicial service and has since worked at the Berlin Regional Court. After her arrest, she is no longer involved in the current decisions of the Berlin Regional Court. As a spokeswoman for the court said on request, the lawyer left civil chamber 19a, which is responsible for construction matters, on Wednesday.

The business allocation plan was changed accordingly on the same day by express decree. Malsack-Winkemann is therefore not involved in current proceedings for the time being. According to the information, she is still available as a judge on a so-called standby list.

According to the information, people were arrested in Baden-Württemberg (8), Bavaria (4), Hesse (3), Lower Saxony (3), Saxony (2), Thuringia (2) and Berlin (1) and one person each in Austria and Italy. There were also searches in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The federal prosecutor’s office wanted to start questioning the first arrested on Wednesday.

The starting point of the investigation is said to be connections between members of the now dismantled association and members of the “United Patriots” group, who were arrested in April and probably wanted to kidnap Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD).
