Many Lebanese live in poverty and already have to do without electricity for hours every day. The crisis is likely to get worse after a decision by an electricity company.
The power supply in crisis-ridden Lebanon threatens to deteriorate further. The Turkish electricity supplier Karpowership announced on Friday that it would begin to shut down electricity production in two power plants floating off the Lebanese coast.
According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, the two ships supply 25 percent of the country’s demand. The decision was preceded, among other things, by payment problems on the Lebanese side. The contract expires on October 1, according to the company’s justification.
Lebanon has been experiencing the worst economic and financial crisis in its history for almost two years. Around three quarters of the population now live in poverty. The energy supply system in Lebanon is outdated and inefficient. The state power grid and private generators can only rarely supply electricity due to the lack of fuel. Most Lebanese have to get by without electricity for hours every day. The state electricity supplier recently warned of an imminent blackout across the country.
One is aware of the difficult energy crisis in the country, said Karpowership. In the past eight years everything has been done to support the people in the country. “We wish the best for the Prime Minister, his government and the country in the months and years to come,” it said.
Karpowership had temporarily suspended the supply in May due to unsolved payment problems and after threatening legal action, but then resumed it – according to its own statements, as a gesture of goodwill. The company announced that it wanted to find solutions to the problems in a constructive dialogue.
