Boomer column: Green is my hope for Germany’s better future

The Union has not managed to renew itself in 16 years of reign. The SPD appears frozen in a similar way to its candidate for chancellor. Only the Greens remain, so that Germany moves towards the future. No matter in which coalition.

From Frank Schmiechen

The future does not wait for Germany. The world is developing rapidly. Standing still is not an option. Not even for a country that has been as successful as Germany in the past few decades. After this election, we finally have the chance that something will change. Not for the sake of change. No. We have to become faster, smarter and more agile. Otherwise the global train towards the future will leave without us.

Senseless folklore from driving or flying bans

The Greens want all of that too. And they now have the political leverage in their hands. I hope that for this purpose they will throw their senseless folklore of cargo bikes, driving or flying bans and SUV hatred overboard. The FDP can certainly help with this. Also against the traditional Green voters. Because who is better suited as a scapegoat for uncomfortable directional decisions than the liberals?

Honestly. With the Transuse word “sustainable” you actually mean “intelligent”, right? We need an intelligent transformation of the German economy. Agreed. How about if you finally recognized the topic of digitization as a solution for almost all questions of the future? Digital solutions are the key to a more human world. Data is the most powerful tool of our time. There are a lot of intelligent people working for the Greens who recognize this.

For boomers like me, the Greens in the 80s were Stoffel in Bundeswehr parkas and self-knitted sweaters, who mainly wanted to stop nuclear power plants and runways and listened to gruesome music. They still exist today. But now the party is also winning elections in stylish high-class districts such as Hamburg-Eppendorf and Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. The new bourgeoisie gathered there hopes – just like me – for smart politics in Germany.

The former popular parties, on the other hand, have lost the young voters. Because they have lost the world. Politicians like Volker Bouffier, Friedrich Merz, Saskia Esken or Wolfgang Schäuble also phenotypically represent a bygone Germany. We need modern, entrepreneurial politicians. No administrative staff. The best solution wins. Pragmatism instead of ideology. Style instead of clothes. A desire for creativity instead of government dough.

Intelligent transformation of society and industry

The Greens have found a comprehensive label for many of our current problems: climate. Because of me. If the solution to climate issues is to modernize our country, to give people more personal responsibility, to provide more education and digitization, to initiate an intelligent transformation in society and industry – the FDP would definitely be there. I also.

Oh. By the way. Tempo 130 for electric cars does not save any CO2.
