Catalonia’s ex-head of government wants to regain immunity

A corresponding urgent application had been submitted to the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ), his legal team announced on Friday.

In any case, Puigdemont will take part in the hearing before an Italian court on Monday, at which a decision is to be made on an extradition request from Spain.

Puigdemont was the leading man in the proclamation of Catalonia’s independence from Spain in 2017. After his deposition by the central government in Madrid, he went into exile in Belgium in October 2017 to avoid prosecution in Spain.

In 2019 he won a mandate in the EU Parliament, but his immunity was later lifted. The 58-year-old was arrested in Sardinia last week on the basis of a European arrest warrant, but was released the next day. On Monday he temporarily returned to Brussels to attend a committee meeting in the EU Parliament.
