FDP Vice Johannes Vogel has spoken out in favor of clearly separating car and bicycle traffic in cities so that more people do without their cars. Cities like Copenhagen show how bicycles are becoming attractive for many people as a means of transport for private transport, Vogel writes in the “Tagesspiegel” (Monday).
A “structural separation” is necessary. “For far too long, cycle paths have been pressed against the street or led directly over the sidewalks,” complained the FDP politician. One consequence of this is accidents. “Instead, we need real, dedicated bike lanes through the city so that people can ride safely.”
FDP Vice: Make alternatives to cars more attractive
Vogel emphasized that “we have to make the alternatives more attractive for fewer cars in the big cities”. The better the S-Bahn and U-Bahn network, the (car) sharing offers or cycle paths, the more often the car is left behind. Then “the renunciation of one’s own car, together with the thought of parking spaces, fixed costs, maintenance and the like, is perceived as a gain in urban freedom”.
Vogel has been driving an electric car for three years, as he made public on Twitter, among other things. “I personally believe that the future of the car is battery-electric,” he writes in the “Tagesspiegel”.
