The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis received the International Charlemagne Prize in Aachen on Saturday. Iohannis was honored with the prestigious award as a bridge builder between East and West.
This honors personalities or institutions who have made a contribution to Europe and European unification.
In his celebratory speech, EU Council President Charles Michel praised the methodical and principled attitude of the Charlemagne Prize winner, in some personal words. The Romanian President was announced as the winner in December 2019. The award ceremony was delayed by almost a year and a half due to the corona pandemic.
Former award winners also took part in the ceremony in the coronation hall of Aachen City Hall. Among them Martin Schulz, Wolfgang Schäuble, the former Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite and the first full-time President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy. North Rhine-Westphalia’s prime minister, the Aachen-born CDU chairman Armin Laschet, had canceled his participation.
