Explorations: Greens accuse the CDU of breach of trust

After the exploratory talks, the FDP and the Greens accuse the Union of a lack of confidentiality. The party is said to have pierced information to the media. This calls into question their position as a worthy interlocutor.

Leading Greens have accused the Union of a lack of discretion before the joint exploratory talks on Tuesday. Confidentiality had been agreed in all rounds, said the political federal manager of the Greens, Michael Kellner, on Tuesday on RTL / ntv “early start”. “The fact that communication is then carried out via the” Bild “newspaper does not cast a good light on the situation in the Union,” said Kellner, who is a member of the Green’s ten-person exploration team.

It was “noticeable” that something had become known from the Union’s only exploratory meeting – the one with the FDP on Sunday. “That really irritated us.” When asked whether he was worried about today’s talks between the Greens and the Union, whether everything would remain a secret, he said: “Yes, I am concerned.”

The first series of exploratory talks on a new government ends with the meeting of the Union and the Greens in the morning. The Green politicians Cem Özdemir and Jürgen Trittin expressed doubts about the negotiating ability of the CDU and CSU. The fact that results leaked from the meeting between the Union and the FDP is not exactly a vote of confidence and a “sign of internal management problems,” said Özdemir on Tuesday in the “RTL Direkt” program. That is a signal that the Union has a massive problem.

Doubts about Union as a negotiating partner

Trittin said: “The decisive point today will be whether the CDU is actually willing and able to reach such negotiations and corresponding agreements at all.” “Germany simply cannot afford a month-long clarification process,” he said on Deutschlandfunk. The politician, who belongs to the left wing of the party, emphasized the dividing lines: “We also know how high the hurdles are. And then it depends very much on the question of whether and to what extent there are negotiating and contractual partners on both sides.” Özdemir and Trittin are not part of the exploration in the closer circle, but belong to the expanded exploration team of the Greens.

After the talks about forming a government, several FDP politicians had accused the Union of breaching the agreed confidentiality, because information from it had reached the media. “Last weekend there were three exploratory talks in which I also took part for the FDP. From two of them you read nothing and hear nothing. One of the alleged contents of the conversation is pierced to the media,” wrote FDP party vice Johannes Vogel on Twitter on Monday. “That stands out, dear Union – and it’s annoying!”

The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported that several politicians who were present at the talks between the Union and the FDP had reported that the FDP had clearly signaled that it was ready for Jamaica. After the talks between the Union, the Greens and the FDP, which broke down in 2017 and were characterized by numerous indiscretions, the Greens and FDP are now relying on the deliberations between the parties to be strictly confidential. Because of the internal quarrels after the historic crash in the federal elections, the Union is accused of portraying a picture that cannot be governed.

Optimism in exploratory talks

The leaders of the CDU and CSU met on Tuesday morning in Berlin for preliminary discussions. CDU boss Armin Laschet, CSU chairman Markus Söder and other members of the exploration teams from both parties did not comment on the content of the deliberations when they arrived at the place of the explorations, the Euref campus – it had been agreed not to disclose. Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) said when a reporter asked what mood he was going into this day: “Always in a good mood. I’m from Saxony-Anhalt.”

Against the background of Laschet’s announcement – he is offering the Greens and FDP a “future coalition” – the choice of the venue should also be a signal to the two possible government partners. The campus advertises itself as a “future location” where 5,000 people research and work on the topics of energy, mobility and sustainability.

The Greens also met for preliminary discussions – they came together in the “Grüns” restaurant on campus. When she arrived, Baerbock said when a reporter asked whether she was optimistic: “I always am.” And when asked what mood she was in for the talks: “In a good mood.”

Three-way talks could start soon

The Greens are striving for a traffic light coalition with the SPD and FDP, but are not ruling out an alliance with the Union and the FDP. The FDP shows its inclination towards the Union, but has not yet committed itself. A Jamaica coalition – named after the flag colors black, yellow, green of Jamaica – is the only chance for Union Chancellor candidate Laschet to save the Chancellery for the Union after all. After the talks between the Union and the Greens, it should become clear relatively quickly whether further rounds of talks are necessary before a decision can be made on whether to start formal coalition negotiations. All sides have announced that there will be no long hanging game. In Berlin it was expected that a traffic light government made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP would initially be negotiated.

Greens managing director Kellner emphasized in the RTL / ntv “early start” “big differences” between the Greens and the Union in social politics, in social issues and in migration. When it comes to climate protection, however, he sees the first signs of movement: “I’ve heard you say, well, we now want to make progress with climate protection too.” Kellner expects a quick decision for three-way talks. “I am optimistic that we can take a big step forward this week,” he said. He was just as confident that the Greens and FDP would agree on a common solution. He did not want to say whether both parties will sit down again.
